Barack Obama recently did an interview with Oprah (hasn't she left yet?) during which he gave himself a B+. As a long time supporter of him I have to say that he over-rated himself and his accomplishments by a considerable amount.
Yes, it's true that he managed to avoid the largest meltdown in the American economy since the Great Depression, however that was an easy choice. During a time of economic meltdown the only reasonable and the most obvious decision is a large injection of government spending. Even a 10th grade member of a high school who has taken basic economics knows that's the answer. That's like saying hey, you're faced with deciding what does one plus one equal and if you get it wrong the whole economy falls apart. Still, one has to admit he got the obvious answer right, which Bush certainly didn't. But is that good enough? Um...no...it's really not.
He has also made the godawful stupid mistake of taking the LBJ route in Vietna...er....excuse me...Afghanistan. He didn't decide to pull out and he didn't decide to throw everything into winning the war either. He screwed the pooch big time here by not not going all in, but by going sort of in or by (doing the right thing) and showing real stones and pulling all the troops out. Bad move. Epic fail. The sad part is that many soldiers will die for nothing because he decided to split the difference. Bad, bad, bad, bad move. Dumb. Stupid. Ignorant. Even criminal.
Then there is health care reform. He has, instead of taking a role of real leadership by demanding that it be real health care reform, with a real public option that is a step toward single payer health care, he has signaled that he is ready, willing and able (eager even) to sign ANYTHING that passes Congress that he can try to claim is real health care reform. Again, he screwed the pooch. As health care reform stands now, if it passes (and I hope it won't because it doesn't deserve to) it is the very definition of the remains of a legislative abortion. It is much worse then nothing at all. Another epic fail.
What else is there? Has he moved forward on gay rights. Um...no...he has not. Has he moved forward on Don't ask, don't tell? Um...nope...big failure there too. Has he done anything impressive on the environment? Um..again....nope. What the hell has he done? The answer is that he has managed to fumble the ball on everything we voted for him to do.
He has failed the number one basic requirement for Democratic President that we vote for. He has failed to produce. We, on the left, the progressives do not just expect results, we demand them and so far Barack Obama has been the worst person we have hired to get results in my 53 years. I supported him since the 2004 convention and I voted for him in the primary and in the general election and god-damn it I expect and demand that he do the job he was hired to do. Get off your ass numb-nuts and do your job! Or, historical first black President or not, we'll kick your ass out and find someone who will!
Right now I give him, at most a C and in a tailspin toward epic failure. And I love the guy.
